New Anesthesia Option Speeds Recovery for Outpatient Cosmetic Surgery Procedures

General anesthesia is still used from coast-to-coast during cosmetic surgeries because it is inexpensive and doctors are very familiar with it. However, this type of anesthesia, which involves a breathing tube, ventilator and an oxygen mask as well as gas (the anesthesia) delivered by a trained anesthesiologist, comes with a variety of unpleasant side effects. In short, general anesthesia can lead to uncomfortable sore throats from the breathing tube, vomiting and general nausea, fogginess and impaired mental function for several hours after a cosmetic procedure, insufficient pain control, as well as risk of serious problems including deep-vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolisms and life-threatening malignant hyperthermia.
