To avoid the accumulation of dirt and grime, you can wipe your fountain with damp cloth while you do your regular housecleaning prior to giving a periodic cleaning of the water fountain. The best way to prevent the accumulation and buildup of impurities and dirt is to make sure that the water is clean always. Be sure to clean and change the water regularly to prevent the build up of dirt and the onset of mosquito larvae. If you have busy and hectic schedule, you can do away with regular changing of fountain water by using distilled water instead of tap water because this type of water is already free from impurities. With distilled water, you do not need to clean the fountain often. This procedure is applicable to smaller type of indoor fountains like tabletop water fountains.
For larger indoor fountains, you can use tap water and purifying agent instead of distilled water. However, you can still use distilled water if you want to have fountain water that is free from impurities. Before changing the water, be sure to turn off the water pump to safely drain the water and prevent electrocution. Use vacuum pump to remove the water or siphon the water manually. You can also use carpet shampooer with hose attachment to remove the water.
If you have rocks inside the basin of your indoor fountain, you have to take it out, wash it to remove the algae buildup and wipe it clean. Be sure to clean the basin using sponge to remove water marks and algal buildup. Apart from the basin and rocks, make sure to clean the water pump and tubes to prevent the onset and accumulation of algae. After you clean the indoor water fountain, put all the things together. Add either clean tap water or distilled water and put water conditioner if you are using tap water.
