Cole Porter’s “Let’s Do It”One of the most iconic musicians from the early 20th century is Cole Porter. He was born in Indiana at the turn of the century to a wealthy family. He was classically educated at Yale University and studied music. He played the piano well and began writing music while still a young man. Nevertheless, he wasn’t successful until the 1920s and 1930s, when his Broadway music and lyrics began taking off. In 1917, he moved to Paris to help with WWI relief efforts. Here, he tied together his American roots with European influences which helped enrich his music. As a classic East-Coast gentleman, he was well acquainted with the favorite tourist spots of the American elite. He wrote “Let’s Do It” in 1928 for the musical Paris. The stanza that mentions Cape Cod is: “Cold Cape Cod clams, ‘gainst their wish, do it/ Even lazy jellyfish, do it/ Let’s do it, let’s fall in love.” The instrumentation is classic 1920s American swing. The lyrics refer to the famous clams of Cape Cod, which are particularly reputed for being juicy snacks on temperate evenings spent looking over the Atlantic Ocean.Vampire Weekend’s “Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa” and “Walcott”The band Vampire Weekend is an upbeat mixture of pop sounds and indie edge. The band is especially new, having only been formed in 2006. The band was formed by students from Columbia University in New York. It’s look is famously American tied to the American Ivy League, with members wearing bright pastel polo shirts and boat shoes. The band’s formation and success are integrally tied to Cape Cod. The name of the band is a reference to the singer’s college film project that influenced their first album. The film was about a man named Walcott that travels to Cape Cod to warn the mayor that vampires are attacking the country. From this concept came the band’s name, as well as the 2 songs that feature Cape Cod references. These songs connect to the cape’s fun atmosphere with their upbeat rhythms and relaxed feel.”Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa” is a song in which the band thinks over the relationship between elite Western culture and places like Africa and India where a strong colonial presence has been felt. Kwassa Kwassa is a Congolese dance and the instrumentation is influenced by the rhythm. The lyrics reference a rich girl listening to foreign music while on vacation in Cape Cod. The song is easy to dance to and reminds listeners of nights spent on houseboats.”Walcott” is a bit more eccentric, with lyrics that reference a mystic seaport, famous Cape Cod lobster, and lots of the schools and districts around the Massachusetts area. Listening to the song, anyone can pick up on the local connection that the band has with the locations and people that enjoy Cape Cod travel in the popular seaside destination.
